Erath 4th of July Celebration
1981 Grand Marshal Richard Dubois
Richard
Dubois was honored by the Erath 4th of July Celebration to
serve as the 1981 Parade Grand Marshal. Dubois is a 1953
graduate of Erath High School. While a student at Erath
High, Dubois was a member of the first football squad
organized at Erath High. The squad was a six man team,
under the direction of Coach Bob Segura.
After graduating from Erath High School, Dubois
went on to attend the University of Southwestern Louisiana,
now UL Lafayette. He is a graduate of the LSU School of
Banking of the South. He also proudly served his country as
a member of the U.S. Marine Corp. Dubois has been very
involved in the community of Erath throughout his life.
The Erath 4th of July Celebration is
one event that Dubois has been involved with almost his
entire life. His involvement began in the 1950’s, and
continued in to the 1990’s. He served as the President,
Vice President, and Board Member of the organization for
many years. As a Board Member of the Erath 4th
of July Association, he promoted the need of a community
building to be built in Erath. The 4th of July
Association saved the profits from several years of
festivals, and constructed the Erath Community Building in
1987. He went on to serve as the Treasurer of the Erath
Community Building Association for many years.
Dubois’ involvement with the Erath Backers Club
began when the club was organized in 1980. It was decided
that the club needed a big fundraiser that could be held
annually to raise money for the student athletes of Erath
High. The annual Erath Backers Club Bar-B-Que Chicken
Dinner was begun in 1982, and Dubois volunteered his time as
a cook for the fundraiser for over fifteen years. Dubois
also served as both President and Board Member of the Backer
Club. Dubois was inducted into the Erath High School
Athletic Hall of fame in 2005.
Dubois served as Mayor of Erath for four years, from 1991 to
1994. His service to his community continued as he served
as Chairman of the Erath Parks and Recreation Commission,
the Erath Housing Authority Board, and the Vermilion Parish
Library Board of Control. He is a proud member of the Erath
Knights of Columbus, as well as the Rotary Club and the
Chamber of Commerce.
Dubois is currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Board of
Directors of Gulf Coast Bank, where he has been employed
since it’s inception in 1971. He is married to the former
Dolores Bolner, and they are the parents of Renee, Ann,
Yvette, Camille, and Richard, Jr. They are also the proud
grandparents of nine.
