2004 4th of July Ambassador
It is with great pride that the Erath 4th of July Association announces that Mr. Lawrence J. Broussard has been selected as the
2004 Ambassador. Each year, the Association selects an individual that exhibits pride in their community, and strives to make the
community a better place. Mr. Broussard has been selected because of his years of service to the Erath community.
Mr. Broussard was born August 15, 1913 in the Prairie Gregg Community. He graduated from Erath High School in 1933, and then
served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the 128th Infantry, were he was commissioned as a Sergeant.
Upon completion of the war, Mr. Broussard returned home and began working for the Jefferson Lake Oil Company, where he worked
for three years. Mr. Broussard later became a mechanic at Nettle Chevrolet in Abbeville for ten years, before leaving to begin his
career at the Texaco Plant in Henry. Mr. Broussard retired from Texaco in 1976 with 31 years of service. He has also raised cattle
Mr. Broussard became a member of the Knights of Columbus in 1943. He is also an organizing member of the Erath Knights of
Columbus Council 3872. He is a charter member of the Council, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. Mr. Broussard
is also a 4th Degree Knight, which he became in 1953. He has served as the Grand Knight of the Erath Council three times, in
1955-56, 1977-78, and 1983-84. Mr. Broussard also served as the Faithful Navigator for the 4th Degree Assembly.
Mr. Broussard's community involvement also includes being a member of the American Legion Post 279 since 1947. He was in
charge of the Finances for the organization for seven years. Mr. Broussard is also a member of the Erath Volunteer Fire
Department. He has been a member since 1947, and led the volunteers as Fire Chief for seven years. He is also a member of the
Vermilion Cattlemen Association. Mr. Broussard is an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church, where he is a
member of the Senior Holy Name Society and has served as usher for 61 years.
Mr. Broussard was married to the former Una Thibodeaux (deceased) for 60 years. They are the parents of two sons, Wilbur and
Vernon, both of Erath. He is also the grandparent of ten: Scotty P. Broussard, Stephanie P. Broussard, Sy Paul Broussard,
Courtney B. Vidallier, Erica B. Hargrave, Suzanne B. Mayard, Suzette B. Stutes, Nicholas Broussard, Allison Broussard, and
Lindsay Broussard. He is also the great-grandparent of four: Hoyt F. Henry, Gabrielle Broussard, Rilee Grace Stutes, and Emma
